According to John Peterson, Director for the City of Ankeny, the ethos of Prairie Trail can be summed up in one word: “sustainability.”
Peterson explains: “When people say, ‘What’s so sustainable?’, we talk about the layout, the walking, the connections the neighborhood makes because of the way it was designed. And then there’s the other piece to sustainability, the energy efficiency. You can see it in our builders’ practices, in our facilities. It’s working.”
When you are in Prairie Trail, you are never more than a few steps away from natural, wide-open green spaces. There are nearly 200 acres of green space throughout the 1,100-acre development designed to provide a variety of activities from active parks for the children to play to taking leisurely, quiet walks on Sunday afternoons, not to mention the largest municipal water park in Iowa, which draws crowds from miles away.
